We often see the dolphins racing along the sides of moored boats, the marinas, wharves and the rocks. Particularly when they are surface fishing and the fish are jumping out of the water trying to escape from the dolphin (See Birds and Dolphins). Dolphins often work together when fishing and some of the dolphins will circle a school of fish while the others race in to grab the fish.īirds will also often feed with the dolphins. The Port River Dolphins use many different techniques to catch their fish including surface fishing, bottom feeding, Kick fishing (using their tails to stun the fish) and fish throwing. Echolocation is when a dolphin releases a sequence of clicks or whistles and then analyses the returning echo to determine the size, shape, distance, direction, speed and even the density of an object. They do not drink water like we do but obtain water from the fish they catch.ĭolphins use echolocation to locate their food. Like all mammals dolphins need fresh water to survive. Dolphins do not usually chew their fish they swallow the fish whole, head first. Sometimes they are racing back and forth chasing after a fish, other times they are using the movement of the water to locate and flush out garfish and other small fish that may be hiding.Īn adult dolphin eats approximately 8-15Kg of fish per day. My vocal call to them is a high-pitched Chippewa Indian chant. It’s also interesting that dolphins seem to be attracted to high-pitched music like the flute, piccolo and Indian wooden recorder. The teeth, apparently, have a much larger purpose. They use their teeth to grab fish and then swallow the fish whole. Interestingly, the dolphin’s teeth are arranged in a way that they function like antenna, receiving incoming sounds. They could see the fetus and detect the heartbeat of the fetus long before the woman even knew she was pregnant. The female dolphins surrounded her and swam circles around her as if for protection. The sound waves bounce off objects in the water and return to the dolphin in the form of an echo. Outgoing sound waves from the melon are projected forward into the water. The melon focuses and modulates the dolphin’s vocalizations and acts as a sort of sound lens. But the melon is the center of the dolphin’s communication, involving echolocation, which is key to survival. These neurons give the dolphin the ability to experience empathy and form complex social relationships. The brain of the bottlenose dolphin holds twice the amount of neurons as humans.
